Scholarly Journals

  • The articles published in scholarly journals are generally intended for a limited audience, namely those who study a particular academic discipline, and oftentimes contain technical terminology accessible mainly to those trained in the field.
  • Scholarly articles contain the analytical graphs, charts, and extensive bibliographies that you typically do not find in magazines or newspapers.
  • The subjects of scholarly articles are normally very specific, and with the case of research journals, contain a careful analysis of raw data (sciences), orginal sources (history), or literature (literary criticism).
  • The articles that ultimately appear in scholarly journals first went through a rigorous review process known as peer review where as many as a dozen other experts in the same field critique the article before it goes to press.
